Philanthropy

Dr. Tan Siu Lin is passionate about giving back to society, and believes that wherever his business takes him, philanthropy should be there as well. Since the 1980s, Dr. Tan has established the Tan Siu Lin Foundation in many different locations, infusing the principle of “giving back to society what society has given us” into his company culture. Embracing a caring spirit for the community, the Foundation serves the society not only through monetary donations, but also through contributions of time and expertise. As the Group continues to grow, Luen Thai’s philanthropic efforts also advance alongside the business across Mainland China, Hong Kong, Saipan, and Guam.

Talent Cultivation Through Education

Education is the foundation of society and human talent fuels the progress of society. With his passion to cultivate talent through education, Dr. Tan Siu Lin is an ardent supporter to education in Mainland China. He has been a long-term supporter of Peking University, contributing towards the establishment of the Tan Siu Lin Center for International Research and Luen Thai Center for Supply Chain System Research. He has also set up numerous scholarships and donated towards the establishment of Huaqiao University in his hometown of Quanzhou, and has also collaborated with Quanzhou Normal University to found the Tan Siu Lin School of Business and Information Technology.

In 2000, the Tan Siu Lin Foundation donated to and renamed the Po Leung Kuk Camões Tan Siu Lin Primary School, the first Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) primary school in Hong Kong. The Foundation also set up scholarships at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong and established the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Dr. Tan Siu Lin Charitable Fund to support students who excel in the areas of sports, music, and the arts.

In 2007, the Tan Siu Lin Foundation donated towards the establishment of the university library fund at the University of Guam. In 2012, the Foundation contributed funds to renovate the Tan Lam Pek Kim English & Communication Building, and in 2010, the Foundation sponsored the construction of the library building at Palau Community College.

Targeted Poverty Alleviation

In 2015, Dr. Tan Siu Lin responded to China’s call to eradicate extreme poverty by establishing the Ren Shan Poverty Relief Foundation with a total donation of HKD 100 million. With a mission to serve society and assist the poor through a “targeted poverty alleviation and elimination” strategy that includes industry support and microfinancing, the Foundation aims to boost the income and education levels of those in poverty-stricken areas while improving their quality of life and self-development skills.

Care for Hong Kong

Luen Thai is committed to corporate social responsibility and supports numerous organizations, including The Community Chest of Hong Kong, Po Leung Kuk, and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. The Tan Siu Lin Foundation has also been a longstanding supporter of Kick It Heart and Chelsea FC Soccer School (Hong Kong), the latter of which is chaired by Dr. Tan’s son, Raymond Tan. In addition to providing elite youth soccer training, the soccer school also aims to share the joy of sports by offering free classes to students from low-income families, as well as special programs for the elderly, prisoners, marginalized youth, those with disabilities, etc.

Hometown Giving

The Tan family deeply respects their heritage and roots, and have been continually involved in charitable programs in the family’s hometown, such as “Sun Yat-sen Pearl Class”, Project Regain Eyesight, Project Walk, and outpatient services for the elderly. The family also build schools, elderly centers, hospitals, and other community facilities, and supports efforts to preserve traditional Quanzhou culture by contributing towards projects such as the restoration of Quanzhou’s Weiyuanlou Square and the establishment of the Quanzhou Charity Federation.

Overseas Philanthropy

To honor and give back to Micronesia, the place where the Tan family and its business have grown and flourished, Luen Thai Group invests heavily in local education and the cultivation of talent through the Tan Siu Lin Foundation and Tan Holdings Corporation. When faced with natural disasters or pandemics such as COVID- 19, Tan Holdings has always extended assistance without delay, and as a result has earned the trust and respect of local governments and citizens. Dr. Tan Siu Lin’s fifth son, Jerry Tan, is deeply committed to philanthropy, especially through the area of sports, and serves as the president of the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association. He also values the wellbeing of local residents and often rallies his employees to volunteer together to serve the community, both through monetary donations and physical service. Raymond Tan serves as board chairman of the Tuloy Foundation and works alongside Father Rocky Evangelista to provide soccer and vocational training to underserved children and youth in the Philippines.

COVID-19 Fight

Early 2020 marked the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected millions of lives across the world. As Honorary Consul of Micronesia in Hong Kong, Dr. Tan Siu Lin donated USD 1 million to The Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR to provide aid to frontline medical workers in Hunan. The Tan family members and Luen Thai Group also spared no effort in contributing money and resources, donating 1.17 million masks to Mainland China and Hong Kong, as well as transporting supplies to the Pacific Islands through chartered flights.
